Background
Cambodia is a country located in Southeast Asia, neighboring Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The country gained it’s independence from France in 1953 under the leadership of Prince Norodom Sihanouk. A number of violent events that occurred within Cambodia, such as the successful coup against Prince Sihanouk, the Cambodian Civil War between 1970-1975, U.S involvement all gave way to the rise of extremist communist group, Khmer Rouge. From 1975 to 1979 this guerilla group, led by Pol Pot, ruled Cambodia under radically cruel forms of communism. In the span of five years, nearly two and a half million people out of a population of seven million were decimated.
